GHMC takes up desilting works at brisk pace

Hyderabad: With monsoon approaching, the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has taken up nala desilting works across Hyderabad at a brisk pace. Mayor Bonthu Rammohan on Wednesday said that necessary measures have been initiated to avoid inundation and overflowing of nalas in Hyderabad. Steps have also been taken to ensure free flow of rainwater during monsoon, he said.

MA&UD Minister K T Rama Rao has already directed GHMC officials to complete the desilting works in Hyderabad on a war footing. On Wednesday, Principal Secretary (MA&UD), Arvind Kumar inspected nala widening works being taken up in Dabeerpura with a cost of Rs 2 crore.
Chief Engineer (Maintenance), GHMC, Mohd Jiauddin said that 345 works were sanctioned to clear 4.76 lakh cubic meters of silt and other waste from nalas.

“Against this season’s target of 3.29 lakh cubic meters of silt, we have cleared 2.60 lakh cubic meters. The removed silt from nalas is being sent to Jawaharnagar dump yard. About 90 per cent of desilting works have been completed in Charminar zone. We have roped in additional workers to expedite desilting works in Khairatabad and Secunderabad zones,” he added.
