Update | Huawei springs an unexpected MatePad Pro 5G launch on the Chinese market
by Deirdre O'DonnellThe 5G version of Huawei's latest premium slate has been on the international market for some months now. However, it has not been available in this OEM's own home market. The company has rather abruptly announced that it will correct this situation tomorrow (March 27, 2020).
Update: The MatePad Pro 5G is now up for pre-order in China. It costs 5299 yuan (~US$739) for an 8GB RAM/256GB SKU, or 6799 yuan (~$949) to raise its internal storage to the maximum of 512GB. To recap, it started at ~$879 (or €799) on its international debut in February 2020. Prospective Chinese customers have a choice of green or orange colorways in their new 5G tablet.
Huawei's official Weibo page has just released details of a new launch for its MatePad Pro 5G. This high-end 10-inch tablet has been available in 4G/Wi-Fi flavors in China (and internationally) for some time; however, the OEM had not brought the 5G variant of the same to this market. Now, it seems this is suddenly no longer the case.
The 5G SKUs of this device are also the only ones to feature 512GB of internal storage. It also only comes with 8GB RAM options, whereas those with more traditional connectivity start at 6GB. Huawei has yet to mention which new MatePad Pro color options are coming to its native market, although its orange version is visible in its new Weibo teaser.
The OEM had in fact revealed that this 5G product would become available in China from June 2020 at its MWC-alternative live-streamed conference, thus obviating the need for a separate event for this release. Nevertheless, the audience in question is getting one: it is taking place tomorrow (May 27, 2020) at 20:00 its time (14:00 CET).
