ARM unveils the Mali-G78 and Mali-G68 mobile GPUs
by Codrut NistorThe new Mali-G78 mobile GPU is more efficient and provides performance improvements of up to 25 percent compared to its predecessor — Mali-G77, which launched last year as the first Valhall-based mobile GPU. Its companion, the Mali-G68, inherits features such as the new FMA unit, but only supports up to 6 cores (24 for the G78).
ARM has just unveiled a whole lot of exciting pieces of hardware, starting with the Cortex-A78 mobile processor that promises a 20 percent sustained performance improvement and ending with the Ethos-N78 NPU, which delivers "unprecedented machine learning capability" and a 25 percent performance increase over its predecessor. However, we will focus on the new Valhall-based mobile GPUs, namely the Mali-G78 and Mali-G68.
Last year's Mali-G77 was ARM's first mobile GPU based on the Valhall architecture, delivering a major performance improvement over its predecessors. Now, the Mali-G78 continues to push the limits with a 25 percent performance increase and support for up to 24 cores. Thankfully, this performance bump also comes with an increase in efficiency, so next-gen mobile devices should be able to provide increased autonomy for mobile gaming sessions or media consumption.
The Mali-G68 is a sub-premium mobile GPU that inherits all the features of its more potent sibling, but only supports up to 6 cores. Obviously, it will power affordable mid-range devices and will provide the best value for mobile gamers on a tight budget.
Thanks to these new mobile GPUs, ARM and Crytek are teaming up to bring the CryEngine to Android and "enable desktop-class graphics on mobile" but there is no information about a time frame and the name of the first CryEngine-based titles that will hit our phones.
