OnePlus 8 series first phones to run Fortnite at 90fps

Company’s new partnership with Epic Games highlights capabilities of the most expensive OnePlus phones yet

OnePlus has announced that its OnePlus 8 and 8 Pro phones have become the first handsets to offer Fortnite at 90fps. The company has partnered with Epic Games to ensure the smoothest playback of the game yet seen on a smartphone.

The OnePlus 8 has a 90Hz refresh rate display and the 8 Pro a 120Hz screen, meaning they are capable of running content at higher framerates than the standard 60Hz.

Previously, Fortnite maxed out at 60fps on capable devices. This is the frame rate the OnePlus 7, 7 Pro, 7T and 7T Pro can play the game at, though all but the OnePlus 7 have a 90Hz refresh rate – meaning these older phones are technically capable of Fortnite at 90fps, but OnePlus is limiting it to its newer, more expensive 8 and 8 Pro phones.

But OnePlus said that “The entire endeavor to bring 90FPS to Fortnite on the OnePlus 8 took months of development,” with CEO Pete Lau commenting that “OnePlus creates the best devices for mobile gaming through our industry leading display, speedy performance, and overall user experience designed with power-users in mind.”

That’s up for debate given there are other great gaming phones on the market, but OnePlus will likely benefit from an affiliation with Fortnite, one of the biggest mobile games in the world.
