BMW reveals 5 Series facelift

BMW has updated the 5 Series with new-look front end, enhanced infotainment and expanded range of powertrains.

All petrol and diesel models are now fitted with mild-hybrid technology, helping to reduce CO2 emissions while also providing a temporary power boost of 11PS.

The 520d, which received the mild-hybrid tech last year, emits from 126g/km in SE trim, with OTR pricing from £39,565.

Petrol models emit from 145g/km, in 520i M Sport guise.

BMW has also expanded the plug-in hybrid line-up with the addition of the 530e xDrive, 530e Touring and a new 545e.

The latter uses a six-cylinder petrol engine, borrowed from the 7 Series, that delivers 389PS but still emits around 50g/km.

Changes to the car’s styling introduce new headlights and a revised grille, keeping the look in-line with the 3 Series.

Alongside the SE and M Sport trims is a new limited edition M Sport Edition trim, which includes more aggressive styling tweaks and 20-inch alloy wheels.

Standard features of the SE include a choice of 17-, 18- and 19-inch alloy wheels, Dakota leather upholstery and heated front seats. The SE Touring includes split folding rear seats and matt silver roof rails, with all body styles also having an electronic tailgate.

New for the SE are electric folding mirrors, front electric lumbar support and Parking Assistant.

The M Sport trim level adds new alloy wheel designs in 18-, 19- and 20-inch sizes , the M aerodynamics package and high gloss shadowline exterior trim.

Inside, there is the M leather steering wheel, front sports seats, anthracite headliner and Aluminium Rhombicle Grey trim details. M Sport suspension is standard except on 530e and 530e xDrive models.

The Driving Assistant Professional package now uses navigation data to spot in advance when a lane change will be required, and this can then be performed using the Lane Change Assistant.

There is also a new Drive Recorder option coupled with Parking Assistant Plus. It uses in-built cameras to record video footage from different points around the vehicle.

Recordings can be up to 40 seconds in length, comprising the 20 seconds of video saved immediately prior to the Drive Recorder being activated and the next 20 seconds. In the event of a collision, the 20 seconds up to the moment of impact and the next 20 seconds are automatically recorded and saved.

BMW Live Cockpit Professional is fitted as standard, with a larger 12.3-inch display, and brings in the latest BMW Operating System 7.0. It includes the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant and smartphone integration via Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
