Guy Pushes Photographer Into Pond, or: Why You Should Insure Your Gear
by Michael ZhangPhotographers with expensive gear often insure it against accidents and theft. This 1-minute video shows something else it can protect you from: asinine “pranks” when you’re simply minding your own business.
According to the St Albans and Harpenden Review, the incident occurred in St Albans, Hertfordshire, England, on May 7th, 2018. The photographer was shooting along the edge of the ornamental lake in Verulamium Park when a man walked up to her from behind, shoved her into the water, and then walked away.
The woman received bruises on her arm and damage to her Canon DSLR equipment worth many thousands of dollars.
“It is believed this was an unprovoked attack on a woman who was taking wildlife photos in the park that day,” police stated after the incident. “Anyone with information is asked to contact police via the non-emergency number 101, quoting crime reference F1/18/2071.”
Although there were many witnesses who immediately began taking photos and videos of the suspect after the attack, it doesn’t appear that the man was arrested or charged — although police appealed for witnesses, there have been no follow-up reports of justice for the photographer.
That’s a shame, but it reinforces our original point: if you haven’t already, you may want to look into insuring your camera gear simply because people like this exist in the world.
