VIDEO: Espanyol crowned Copa del Rey champions
by BeSoccerOn 27 May 2000, Espanyol won their third Copa del Rey title, their first in 60 years against Atletico Madrid.
In May 2000, Espanyol played Atletico Madrid in the Copa del Rey final at Valencia's Mestalla. Back in 2000, Espanyol were actually the favourites.
The Catalans got off to a flyer when Raul Tamudo made it 1-0 inside two minutes against Atletico Madrid. Sergio Gonzalez doubled their lead six minutes before the end of the game and even though Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink pulled one back in the 90th minute, it was too late for Fernando Zambrano's men.
Espanyol won the cup for the first time in 60 years and finished 14th in La Liga while Atletico Madrid, despite beating Barca 6-0 in aggregate in the semi-final, lost the final and were relegated from La Liga.
