Donald Trump spends Memorial Day weekend attacking female opponents and golfing
by Jacob GeanousDonald Trump had a busy Memorial Day weekend as he golfed, hit out at female political rivals and pushed conspiracies on Twitter as the US coronavirus death toll nears 100,000.
Trump golfed for the first time in 75 days over the weekend at his private club in Potomac Falls, Virginia. He was seen with three other men and their caddies – none of whom were wearing masks – during his triumphant return to his favorite sport.
The president’s golf outing earned him criticism by those who considered his two days of leisure to be negligent as the country continues to struggle through the coronavirus crisis, which has killed more than 99,000 on Monday.
One of Trump’s most vocal critics was his likely opponent in the upcoming presidential election, Joe Biden, who hit out at Trump, saying ‘Presidency is about a lot more than tweeting from your golf cart.’
Trump did in fact spend much of the three-day weekend – which is a national dedication to America’s fallen service member – tweeting. He also retweeted numerous attacks on his Democratic rivals, specifically women of the party.
Many of the inflammatory tweets Trump retweeted on Sunday came from former Republican congressional candidate John Stahl, who lost his bid to represent Californias’s 52nd Congressional District in 2012.
In one of the tweets later shared by Trump, Stahl attacked former Georgia gubernatorial candidate Stacy Abrams for her appearance. In another, Stahl called former Secretary of State and presidential candidate Hillary Clinton a ‘skank.’
‘We just got a look at the official portrait for the self proclaimed Governor of Georgia. She fought a tough race, kissed a lot of babies and visited every buffet restaurant in the state,’ Stahl wrote in a tweet later retweeted by Trump which appeared to attack Abrams for her weight.
Trump also retweeted a tweet from Stahl in which he referred to Clinton as ‘HRC the skank.’
In a third presidential retweet, Stahl hit out at Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi, writing that ‘her face seems glossy and she is sporting a poorly marked 2nd set of eyebrows.
Trump’s active weekend on Twitter also included the promotion of an unfounded conspiracy theory that MSNBC ‘Morning Joe’ anchor Joe Scarborough killed his intern, Lori Klausutis, in 2001.
The president urged his followers to read an article from the conservative news website True Pundit, that alleges there was foul play involved in Klausutis’s death.
Trump then went on to write: ‘So a young marathon runner just happened to faint in his office, hit her head on his desk, & die? I would think there is a lot more to this story than that? an affair? what about the so called investigator.’
There is currently no confirmed evidence that Scarborough had any role in Klausitis’s death. At the time, he was a GOP representative in Florida.
Trump has since defended himself for his weekend golf outing, although he has not commented on his Twitter remarks or retweets.
‘Some stories about the fact that in order to get outside and perhaps, even a little exercise, I played golf over the weekend,’ Trump tweeted Monday morning.
‘The Fake and Totally Corrupt News makes it sound like a mortal sin – I knew this would happen! What they don’t say that it was my first golf game in almost 3 months, and if I waited 3 years, they would still do their usual “hit” pieces anyway.
The president went on to attack the ‘sick’ and ‘truly deranged’ media, ‘Sleepy Joe’s poor work ethic,’ and Barack Obama, who criticized for golfing in Hawaii during his presidency.
