Leaked Motorola RAZR 2 specifications are disappointing - Gizchina.com

by

Back in November last year, Motorola introduced its first foldable smartphone in the form of a revived Motorola RAZR. The handset also was the very first foldable smartphone to ship with a clamshell form factor. A few months later, Samsung used this design-language to build the Galaxy Z Flip. Despite its announcement in 2019, the RAZR took several months to go on sale, which ended up making its specifications even more obsolete. The RAZR, in fact, isn’t a flagship smartphone and came with the old Snapdragon 710. For comparison, its major competitor Galaxy Z Flip boasts the Snapdragon 855+. While the SD710 is a good chipset, it is good for the mid-range segment and not for a device that costs more than $1,400. For that reason, the handset wasn’t really exciting as far hardware is concerned.

Now, Motorola is preparing its new foldable smartphone that will come under Motorola RAZR 2 or RAZR 2020 moniker. Today, some of the key specifications of the said device have surfaced online, and unfortunately, it seems that the company didn’t address the problem with the subpar hardware.

Motorola RAZR 2 specifications

According to XDA-Developers, an unnamed source has revealed some key details about the next-gen RAZR. According to the report, the phone boasts a “smith” codename and has the “XT2071-4” model number. Now, the most disappointing part – The Motorola RAZR 2 will ship with a Snapdragon 765 (not Snapdragon 765G). So, once again, Motorola’s foldable device will be below other foldable phones with flagship hardware. The Snapdragon 765 is good, but its performance can’t even surpass the Snapdragon 855+ found in the Z Flip.

The report states that the processing power will be coupled with 8GB of RAM and 256GB of Internal Storage. Moreover, the company will fit a 2,845mAh battery this time. The original phone came with a small 2,510mAh and surviving for an entire day with that amount is a struggle. This still is less than what Samsung is offering with its latest foldable phone. The Z Flip has a 3,300mAh battery.

For now, Motorola is keeping essentially the same design of the original RAZR but the company should adopt new technologies for the display such as UTG (Ultra-Thin Glass). The camera department will be covered with a 48MP ISOCELL Bright GM1 sensor. That’s it! Once again, the phone will ship with just a single camera in the rear. However, lovers of selfies will get a decent camera this time around. Instead of the 5MP unit found in the first phone, the RAZR 2 will pack a 20MP selfie snapper.

Last but not least, the phone ships with Android 10 straight out of the box with some add-ons made by Motorola to enhance the dual-screen experience. The report states that the RAZR 2 will go official in China and North America first and eventually will reach India and Europe. Due to the presence of Snapdragon 765, the new phone will support 5G networks. But don’t expect mmWave 5G networks due to the size of the antennas.

The hardware can slightly change until the release, which is happening in September according to a Motorola executive. If the phone comes with the exact specs as the report says, then we can conclude that Samsung will keep the vertically-folding segment under its belt. Moreover, the Korean firm is rumored to launch a new 5G version of the Galaxy Z Flip in the coming months.
