Coronavirus: There is something positive about Covid-19 management in Nigeria - Jonathan

Former president, Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, has cautioned against the possibility of coronavirus pandemic breeding dictators in Africa as scourge exceeds five-million threshold globally.

The former president issued this vital warning on Friday, May 22, while participating in a webinar organised by the Kofi Annan Foundation.

Jonathan enjoined African leaders to be careful of the way they handle the scourge which has ushered the world into unrest, adding that "all continental bodies must come up with their own minimum standards."

“This is the time that many continental bodies must come up with their own minimum standards for any country going into election to operate," the former president remarked.

“Otherwise people who ordinarily would have loved to be dictators will now exploit the problem of the COVID-19 pandemic and do what is not in line with the laws of the land.”

Speaking further, Jonathan hailed President Muhammadu Buhari and the state governors for taking central responses in the fight against the pandemic.

He also expressed delight in the federal government's post-Covid-19 blueprints while commending the roles played across other levels of government.

“In Nigeria, I have seen one thing about the management of the COVID-19 which is also positive. We’ve seen the role played by the state governments, and some of the state governments are even looking post-COVID-19 era the economy of their people," the former president submitted.

Meanwhile, Legit.ng reported that Jonathan has finally disclosed the reason for his low visibility in politics with the former president saying he has moved focus to his foundation, Goodluck Jonathan Foundation.

GEJ, as fondly called, is the first democratically elected president in Africa to be unseated through the ballot process after losing to President Muhammadu Buhari in an epochal 2015 general election.

Five years later, Jonathan, who retreated to his hometown Otuoke in Bayelsa, said he is now focused on building a foundation to catalyse the positive social and economic progress being experienced across Africa.
