Today in sports history: May 26 - Manchester United claim treble with late win over Munich

Some of the stories of the past that led sporting headlines around the world on May 26.

1989

Arsenal stun Liverpool 2-0 at Anfield to claim their first English top division trophy in 18 years.

A 94th-minute Michael Thomas goal lifted the 'Gunners' above Liverpool on goals scored, after both teams finished on 76 competition points, with an identical goal difference of 37.

The outcome began 30 years of domestic league misery for Liverpool, who haven't won the Premier League crown since 1988.

Manchester United score two injury-time goals to beat Bayern Munich in the Champions League Final in Barcelona.

Bayern led for 85 minutes, before Teddy Sherringham drew United level in the 91st minute. Norwegian striker - and current coach - Ole Gunnar Solskjaer wrote himself into football history, netting a 93rd-minute match-winner, as the 'Red Devils' completed the League/FA Cup/European treble.

2001

The Brumbies top the Sharks 36-6 to clinch the Super 12 crown at Bruce Stadium in Canberra.

In a case of third-time lucky, the Australian side had previously suffered final defeats to the Blues in 1997 and the Crusaders in 2000.

The Brumbies broke the New Zealand stranglehold on Super Rugby with a devastating second-half display.
