'He can stay where he is' - Wolves transfer rumour destroyed by Newcastle United fans

Wolves transfer news - Former Chelsea striker is being linked with WWFC and Newcastle

Wolverhampton Wanderers could rival Newcastle United for the signing of former Chelsea striker Gonzalo Higuain, according to reports.

Higuain returned to Juventus last summer after an unsuccessful loan stint at Stamford Bridge having scored just five Premier League goals.

Juve reportedly want to offload him in the next transfer window with the ex-Argentina international, 32, struggling back in Serie A.

The Express claim Wolves and Newcastle are potential destinations while former club River Plate are also credited with an interest.

A move to Molinuex would mark a massive shift in transfer policy for Wolves while Newcastle could also be willing to splash out on younger, more expensive targets after their impending takeover goes through.

Amanda Staveley's consortium, backed by the Saudi Public Investment Fund and the Reuben brothers, is close to completing a deal to buy the Magpies from Mike Ashley.

Fans in the north east were unimpressed by the prospect of Higuain pitching up at St James' Park, with one saying: "Absolutely not. Also totally forgot he even played in the PL tbh."

"I don't even think Higuain would improve our current squad," said another. "He can stay where he is."

A third added: "Hardly an ambitious move for our potential new owners. I'm all for us going for a proven striker, but not one that's on the verge of retiring."

"No thanks," remarked another supporter on social media. "He's finished."

A fifth added: "Giving once great players a last pay day shouldn't be the transfer policy. QPR tried it and it couldn't have gone worse. Would rather we went targeted younger, hungrier players with big potential."
