Manchester City have rejected an offer from Barcelona to swap Nelson Semedo and Joao Cancelo - according to reports in Spain.

Cancelo joined City in last summer's transfer window in a deal that saw Danilo head to Juventus but the Portuguese has struggled during his debut season in England.

The former Inter Milan star has failed to threaten Kyle Walker's starting berth at right-back, starting just eight Premier League games this season.

Given his difficult start to life with the Blues, the 25-year-old has already been linked with an exit and Barcelona are believed to be huge admirers of the Portugal international.

Various outlets have suggested they are willing to offer Semedo in a straight swap for Cancelo but Marca claim City have told the La Liga giants they are not interested as they don't deem the deal to be clear enough.

The same report claims City were offered Semedo in the January transfer window but told Barcelona no again.

Elsewhere, Rafael Benitez is reportedly keen to return to Newcastle and is eyeing a move for City defender John Stones.

Benitez departed the Magpies in the summer for Dalian Professional in China but the Telegraph claim he is interested in returning to St. James Park if their Saudi takeover is completed.

They believe the former Liverpool boss will use the influx of transfer funds to attempt to lure Stones from the Etihad Stadium.

Stones has endured a difficult season with the Blues and Benitez is reportedly willing to offer him an escape route at Newcastle.
