SURREY (NEWS 1130) — Despite safety concerns, Surrey City Council has approved a barbershop’s request to serve liquor.

During Monday’s Surrey City Council meeting, the city has granted Trendzone Barber Shop, located on 152 Street near Croydon Drive, a liquor license — allowing staff to serve up to 25 customers at a time.

However, there were some major concerns raised by Councillor Linda Annis, who say Surrey already has the most liquor stores in all of B.C.

“I too won’t be supporting it. I don’t think that that’s what South Surrey needs, It’s not right, it’s a stretch and I think that we don’t need that here right now,” she says.

Councillor Brenda Locke also did not support the motion.

The shop owners say the move would help create jobs and allow for a more enjoyable experience for customers.

Given the COVID-19 pandemic, it’s still not clear how exactly the shop would keep up with health regulations.

The barbershop will be regulated and must follow all Serving It Right guidelines.
