Rihanna is celebrating 15 years of Pon de Replay and we officially feel old

by

Remember when Rihanna released her debut single Pon de Replay? Well, that was back in 2005 and it’s now been 15 years since.

We officially feel old.

The singer, 32, took to Instagram on Monday to celebrate the huge milestone and thank fans for supporting her since day one, while reminiscing about that time she was ‘shaking in the hallways’ waiting to audition in front of Jay Z.

How?! How has it been 15 years already since Rhi Rhi first burst onto the music scene?

Sharing a message to her Instagram story, Rihanna wrote: ‘#15yearsofRihanna Thank you for all the love on this hashtag today! Man this is trippy.

‘Feels like just yesterday I was shaking in the hallways of Def Jam waiting to audition for Jay.’

She continued: ‘Pon de Replay is where it all began… 15 years later and I’m here because God led me to you, and you guys have held me up, supported me, tolerated me, loved me, kept it too real with me, and we gon always be connected because of that!

‘I love you Navy, and I cherish you. I’m so grateful to be gifted you as my fans and family! G4L!’

Rihanna first signed with Def Jam Recordings way back when in 2005, when Jay-Z was president and CEO of the label.

At first he reportedly thought Pon de Replay was ‘too big’ for Rihanna, but later changed his mind and signed her up after she auditioned in front of him in New York City with the track.

And the rest, as they say, is history. Since then, Rihanna’s gone on to become a multi-million dollar recording artist, reportedly worth a cool £468million and with eight albums to her name.

But while fans are keen for the star to bring out her ninth album release, Rihanna has shut down talk of new music.

She even joked she’d ‘lost’ her new album when one fan asked her where it is.

Too busy getting involved in coronavirus relief efforts to focus on new material, Rihanna told fans during a recent Instagram Live: ‘If one of y’all motherf***ers ask me about the album one more time when I’m tryna save the world, unlike y’all president….on sight.’

Rihanna and Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey donated $4.2million to help domestic violence victims in LA during the pandemic.

She previously announced her Clara Lionel Foundation is providing $5 million in grants to people working against Covid-19 on the frontline and she and Jay-Z followed that up with another $1 million each to fight coronavirus.
