'Alive by the grace of God': Allen West being released from hospital after motorcycle crash
by Madison DibbleFormer Florida Rep. Allen West is being released from the hospital to his home in Texas after suffering multiple injuries in a motorcycle crash.
West, 59, was airlifted to the hospital on Saturday and was found to have suffered a concussion, several fractured bones, and multiple lacerations. In a post to his campaign's website, West's team expressed his gratitude and announced he would be heading home on Memorial Day.
"The West family is filled with joy and thankfulness to share that LTC West will be released from the hospital and heading home," the website states. "LTC West has shared with us the importance of honoring Memorial Day and those that have given their lives for our freedoms and does not want his release to overshadow that critical message."
West's team reported that officers who responded to the scene of the accident believe that West was cut off by another vehicle prior to colliding with another motorcycle. In a Facebook post, West said, "I am alive by the grace of God.”
West, a retired Army lieutenant colonel, moved to Texas after serving one term as a U.S. congressman in Florida from 2011 to 2013. He lost his reelection bid to Democrat Patrick Murphy in the 2012 election.
West is currently running to become the chairman of the Republican Party of Texas.
