The death has occurred of legendary Cork boxing trainer Maurice Walsh.

Born in Providence Rhode Island, Walsh had an illustrious sporting career including a stint playing with a feeder club for the New York Giants while he also gained a reputation as an innovative young coach.

He came to Ireland after his wife Margaret was left a pub in Shanagarry in the seventies and quickly immersed himself in the East Cork sporting community, perhaps helped by the fact his mother was from Aghada and his father from Ladysbridge.

He first worked with the local Russell Rovers GAA club before he began a near 40-year association with St Colman’s Boxing Club.

His sons collected over 20 All-Ireland titles between them while Walsh also trained the likes of Eanna Falvey, who would become the Irish rugby team doctor, and All-Ireland medal-winning Cork hurler Kevin Hartnett.

The club today posted a message on Facebook: “We are heartbroken at the death of our dear friend, mentor and coach Maurice “Pip” Walsh, who passed away peacefully last night at home with his family. We extend our deepest sympathy to the Walsh family. Pip will be sadly missed by all who knew him far and wide, may he Rest In Peace.”

Maurice Walsh is survived by his wife Margaret (née Kennefick), and children, Michael, Sean, Billy, Kevin, and Patrick.
