SWORD Over SHEILD: Marvel’s Tough Pill To Swallow

Agents of Shield season 7 trailer contradicts Marvel’s Endgame time travel theory and reveals more than what meets the eye

After a long wait, the final season of Marvel’s Agents of Shield premieres this month. The show has already caused a lot of buzz following the released premiere clip of the show’s first episode.

The AoS series is helmed by Avengers fame director Joss Whedon, for ABC Network under Marvel Television banner. However, when Kevin Feige took over Marvel Television the show announced its final season.

The decision comes following the spin-off series that Marvel Studios’ is creating for Disney+. While Agents of SHIELD never made an MCU reference Disney+ series are Marvel’s first step in expanding its universe from big to the silver screen.

But now there is an exception.

Agents of SHIELD in Multiverse

The final season of the show is set to bring back all its stars including a Life Model Decoy of Coulson for one final adventure.

The new trailer of Agents of SHIELD season 7 got fans really excited as it features a very interesting conversation between SHIELD director Mckenzie, Daizy Johnson, Deke Ward and Agent Coulson.

Walking down the streets of 1931 New York City, the group contemplates how much effect their actions during the time travel will affect their main reality. Deke however, offers an explanation that sounded similar to time travel explained in the MCU’s Multiverse theory.

Picking on the presence of various timelines Deke says “Imagine time is a stream, too many sticks will cause a jam, and that would change the direction of the water, and that’s bad”. This contradicts the time travel rules explained in the Endgame by The Ancient One and Hulk.

It is obvious that their time travel to the past is probably part of some “evil-thwarting” mission. It isn’t clear their actions will affect the MCU universe as a whole.

Reading SWORD Between the Lines

However, the trailer hint is not only about the possible connection between Endgame and Agents of SHIELD. It also hints at the tough pill that Marvel Studios swallowed!

Spider-Man: Far From Home hinted at the presence of SWORD in the MCU. For the uninitiated, SWORD is Sentient World Observation and Response Department. It is an agency which deals with extraterrestrial threats to Earth.

The trailer of Loki Series also saw the presence of TVA in the MCU. So given the presence of these intergalactic authorities in the MCU and the breakup of SHIELD long ago in the main timeline. It looks like the Studio will let go of the SHIELD altogether.

For long fans, cast and crew of AOS has complained about no acknowledgement of the show from the studios.

Chloe Bennet, who plays Quake from the comic had at some time in the past even criticized the management for its obvious neglect of the TV shows.  She said “I don’t know. People who make movies for Marvel, why don’t you acknowledge what happens on our show?”

AoS crossover to MCU

Regardless of the fact that these turbulent times saw dwindling and cancellation of certain MCU TV shows, Agents of Shield has managed to survive the onslaught. Although, the show has easily stood tall among its peers.

However, considering the current timeline and the fact that a couple of upcoming shows are exploring the Multiverse theory, it might not be out of place to expect a couple of cameo appearances from certain Marvel movie characters or perhaps, a more subtle connection.

Several fan theories suggest that this final season might set up a crossover into the MCU movie for one or two characters from the show. The only character that has made crossover appearances in Marvel movies is Agent Coulson. Although in the real sense of the word, he first appeared in the movies before starring in the series, with his most recent appearance being 2019’s Captain Marvel.

From LMDs, to the Framework and intergalactic space travel, the previous six seasons have taken fans and viewers on a thrilling sci-fi adventure that has seen the team explore wild science theories and battle some pretty cool villains.

It remains to see if this final season will be enough to connect all the dots and link all the open plots for a befitting ending. Whatever the case is, the new season might just give viewers a more elaborate view into the Multiverse theories that will be explored in future MCU installations.

The first episode of the new season is set to air on May 27.
