Tyrone Mings has waded into the ongoing Dominic Cummings storm after Boris Johnson's top aide flouted lockdown rules.

Mr Cummings - the man behind the government's stay-at-home guidelines - has today continued to defend two 264-mile trips to Durham to see family last month.

Fronting up to media today, Mr Cummings admitted he drove to Barnard Castle with his wife Mary and child while self-isolating in the North East due to coronavirus in order to test his eyesight before making the long drive home to London.

Sightings of Prime Minister's aide by members of the public in the picturesque Teesdale town on April 12 have been one of the most controversial elements of his 260-mile trip at a time when both he and his wife Mary were showing symptoms of Covid-19.

Mr Cummings, though, dismissed suggestions that the trip to the town, around 30 miles from Durham, was undertaken for leisure or sightseeing purposes, insisting instead that he and his wife wanted to be sure that he was in a fit state to undertake the long drive back to the capital.

He had sat by the river in order to recover from a brief bout of sickness, he claimed, and was seen with his wife and child in a nearby wood because they had stopped the car to allow the young boy to relieve himself when he needed the toilet, he said.

As for Mings, the popular Aston Villa and England centre-back watched today's press briefing with a wry smile and issued the following post which, to some, was "the greatest tweet of all time".

After witnessing Cummings' explanation of testing his eyesight with a drive to Barnard Castle, Mings said: "Barnard castle, a sight for sore eyes. Catchy one."

His followers reacted in their droves, and here's the best of the reaction:
