Two injured in ATV accident near Mount Washington base

A man and a woman were taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries Monday when the all-terrain vehicle they were riding left a logging road near the foot of Mount Washington.

“It looks like they were coming down the logging road and it was wet and greasy,” said Courtenay Fire Department Capt. Greg Lamb. “So it looks like they went off, hit about six trees and ended up on a big tree.”

One person suffered a lower leg injury and the other one sustained an upper-body injury in the incident, which happened about 12:50 p.m., he said.

Lamb said a helicopter had been launched as part of the rescue effort but it was called off by the paramedic specialist on site in favour of ground transport to the hospital.

The area where the crash happened is popular for recreation in the summer months, he said.

Lamb noted that rescuers had some trouble locating the crash scene because the victims did not know exactly where they were when they called for help.

“The first place they sent us was the wrong direction,” Lamb said. “A family member finally got a hold of them and they gave the proper location.”
