In a recent interview with ex-England defender Rio Ferdinand, Fabregas said he loved watching Gerrard when he was young, even though he always wanted to model his game on Scholes'.

"I have to say that since I was little, I had this thing about Steven Gerrard," he told Ferdinand on The Locker Room YouTube series.
"Steven Gerrard was someone that, don't ask me why, in my hometown, when we used to watch the Premier League highlights on a Sunday afternoon and he used to score these screamers from outside the box, running into space and he used to be everywhere.
"With that No. 17 that he was wearing, I used to look up to him a lot, to be honest.
"But in terms of the way and that I could say I loved the way this guy played as he reminded me a little bit of myself, as it was the way I liked to see football, it was Paul Scholes.

"You (Ferdinand) had the privilege of playing with him for years and you will tell me better. What a player he was.
