Two killed as fire engulfs IDP camp in Borno

An Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camp in Maiduguri, the Borno state capital has been gutted by fire.

About 1,613 houses at the Muna garage IDP camp were affected by the fire, Channels TV reports.

Two persons who sustained severe burns died from their wounds.

According to the Borno State Emergency Management Agency chairperson, Yabawa Kolo, the unfortunate incident happened on the eve of the Eid-El-Fitr.

Governor Babagana Zulum has visited the camp to check out the level of damage caused by the fire.

According to him, the continuous fire incidences in makeshift camps further emphasise why they should be completely closed down in the state.

Zulum disclosed that the construction of ten thousand housing units across the state, with the affected population in mind, has been approved by the federal government.

The governor stated that once funds are released, the construction will commence immediately so as to bring an end idea of living in temporary shelters.

Several IDP camps in Nganzai, Ngala, Mafa and Monguno local governments were gutted by fire in the first quarter of this year alone. The fire incidents were as a result of the cluster settlement of the people.

On the evening of Thursday, April 16, a fire incident that killed at least 14 people at an IDP camp in Ngala local government area of the state. Many also sustained injuries.

Reacting to the terrible news, President Muhammadu Buhari described it as ‘extremely horrifying’.

The president who mourned the victims ordered the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management, and Social Development to investigate the incident.

In another report, the Borno governor was said to have paid a visit to IDPs camps, where he spent the night distributing items to about 1675 families.

Zulum assured the IDPs of his unrelenting stance to help them resettle comfortably in their various communities.
