After a controversial campaign marked with violence, alleged fraud and arrests, Burundians rubbed shoulder to shoulder against the virus last Wednesday as they marked their ballots to replace the country’s long-reigning, autocratic president, Pierre Nkurunziza.

And the outgoing head of state’s handpicked successor Evariste Ndayishimiye has been declared the winner of the 2020 Presidential elections.

Evariste Ndayishimiye won the Burundi presidential election, securing 68.72 percent of the vote, the electoral commission said on Monday.

Definitive results will be published on 4 June.

The 52-year-old ex- general Evariste Ndayishimiye was going against the main opposition competitor Agathon Rwasa, and five other candidates.

Experts say this was the first competitive vote in Burundi since a civil war that began in 1993 and ended in 2005.

The retired General Ndayishimiye, also popularly known as Gen. NEVA is the former Secretary General of the party, a former minister of interior and security, and once ran the department of military affairs in the president’s office.

He is very much loved by the military.

In his electoral campaigns, Ndayishimiye promised to reduce poverty, boost infrastructure projects and improve agriculture to recover the plunged economy of the former Belgian colony.

His vote into office comes after the redrawal to run for another re-election by Nkurunzinza, five years after his highly contested re-election for a third term sparked violence that left at least 1,200 dead, saw 400,000 flee the country.

Mr Nkurunzima negotiated an honorary title of a “supreme guide to patroitism”  as token for his agreement to step down and pave way for the new leader.

He (Nkurunzinza) will, from today, be consulted by his successor on matters of national security and national unity.

The newly elected Rt. Gen Evariste Ndayishimiye, a very religious man is married to Angeline Ndayubah.
