Kisumu Confirms 3 Covid-19 Cases - Nyong'o

Kisumu Governor Anyang' Nyong'o on Monday, May 25, confirmed the county had registered three positive Covid-19 cases.

The governor, in a statement, informed that none of the cases was a resident as two were truck drivers who had travelled from South Sudan through Uganda while the third was a mourner who had travelled from Nairobi to attend a burial in Nyando. 

"This is to notify the general public that Kisumu County has had 3 confirmed Covid-19 cases since Saturday, May 23, 2020.

"Two (2) of the cases are currently at the JOOTRH (Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital) Covid-19 Isolation Facility, and One (1) case is in an Isolation facility in Nairobi," read his post in part.

According to Nyong'o, the first two cases were long-distance truck drivers, both male and aged 29 years and 82 years.

The duo was intercepted by the Public Health surveillance teams having travelled from South Sudan and Uganda respectively through the Busia Border Control on Saturday, May 23.

The former Kisumu Senator revealed details of the third patient who travelled back to Nairobi following a funeral and was screened in Kisumu.

"The third case, a 33-year old female, was identified by our Public Health surveillance team having travelled with 19 other persons from Nairobi to attend a funeral in Nyando Sub-County on Saturday, May 23, 2020.

"All the 20 were screened and tested for Covid-19. This case, having travelled back to Nairobi, has been referred to Nairobi Metropolitan surveillance teams and is currently in an isolation facility," wrote Nyong'o.

The Governor added that the county has stepped up its efforts in contact tracing and testing for all the 3 confirmed cases.

Nyong'o also announced a toll-free Covid-19 response number, 0800 720 575, through which residents can report suspected cases.

In the daily briefing by the Ministry of Health on Monday, May 25, Chief Administrative Secretary (CAS), Dr Mercy Mwangangi did not mention the cases publicised an hour earlier by the governor as she confirmed 72 new cases countrywide bring the tally 1,286 with 402 recoveries (9 new) and 52 fatalities (1 new).
