38 Rwandans who sneaked into Kalangala quarantined in Buvuma
by URN38 Rwandan nationals who illegally entered into Buvuma district have been quarantined.
The group which includes 28 men and 10 women entered the district through Kalangala district to Lubya island but were intercepted on Monday by the district COVID-19 surveillance team.
According to the district health officer (DHO) Baker Kanyike, the group has been quarantined at Buvuma college school. Agnes Nabirye the resident district commissioner says the Rwandans somehow managed to beat the marine surveillance to reach Buvuma.
She says that several Rwandan, Tanzanian and Kenyan nationals have made it a habit to illegally enter the district to engage in silverfish business.
“They have come from Kalangala side to involve in silverfish business, they travel during night hours from different localities. A team that we have intercepted are Rwandans”
The district LCV chairperson Alex Mabiriizi attributes the blame on government laxity to treat water districts as the rest of mainland border districts. He notes that securing water border areas is difficult for the district due to a limited budget.
“We have so many areas that are not easily monitored and are used by many people to sneak in the country through our local council chairpersons are also doing tremendous work of alerting the surveillance team whenever new entrants turn up,” he said.
