EDGE OF MADNESS

by

THIS is the moment an idiot was millimetres from death at a popular beauty spot as he walked around the very edge of an unstable 400-foot cliff.

The heart-stopping moment was captured today at the Birling Gap in East Sussex.

Many can be seen admiring the breathtaking view and taking photos from the top of cliff, while standing at a safe distance from the edge.

One man, who appeared to not be wearing any safety equipment like a harness, is seen walking closer to the edge that leads to a 400-foot drop.

He appears to turn around while on an extremely narrow section of the cliff and pose for a picture.

The man then looked straight down, despite the imminent danger to his life.

The nail-biting scene comes as authorities have urged people to be careful when visiting the cliffs as hundreds enjoy the Bank Holiday sunshine.

The Birling Gap Coastguard said Wednesday was the busiest day of the year so far.

They wrote on Facebook: "This week saw the busiest day of the year so far, with coastguards being called out to 152 incidents and rescuing 119 people who found themselves in trouble on Wednesday.

"Now, more than ever, people need to respect the coastline. Coronavirus hasn’t gone away and your choices might put our frontline responders at risk."

A Birling Gap Coastguard spokeswoman told MailOnline: "We really can't stress enough how important it is to keep back from cliff edges. There is no ''safe'' place to be and the cliffs along the UK coastline are continuously eroding.

"Use the designated paths, take notice of any warning signs, be responsible and don't take any unnecessary risks.

"It's more important than ever to take extra care in these extraordinary times. Coronavirus hasn't gone away and your choices might put our frontline responders at risk.

"As always, if you see anyone in trouble, call 999 and ask for the Coastguard."
