Video of Leo Varadkar enjoying sun in Phoenix Park sparks Twitter debate

A video of Taoiseach Leo Varadkar enjoying the sun in the Phoenix Park has sparked quite a debate on Twitter.

The video shows Varadkar and his partner Matthew Barrett meeting friends in the Dublin park.

The debate started when a number of Twitter users accused Varadkar of breaking COVID-19 restrictions.

This is despite the fact he was within his 5km radius and only in a group of four.

One Twitter user wrote: “Absolutely bizarre - @LeoVaradkar in a public park today breaching basic social distancing rules. Imagine if this was Boris or Trump! Havin’ the craic with no top on, in the midst of a pandemic?!”

Another added: “If this pandemic was as serious as Leo was making it out to be he wouldn't be topless, and laughing in the Phoenix park. It's a total joke.”

However, others defended Varadkar, pointing out that he's entitled to a day off and didn't break any rules.

One person wrote: "Leo Varadkar is back in his office probably at the crack of dawn this morning working, while the rest of ye are sitting at home, zooming in on a picture of him to see if it’s 2m as if yer the county council engineers. People need a new hobby."

Another added: "I don’t know who needs to hear this but Leo!! Varadkar !! Is a human!! Like the rest of us!! Trying to do his job just give it a day off."

A spokesperson for the Taoiseach said Varadkar was complying fully with COVID-19 guidelines.

In a statement, the spokesperson said Varadkar was within the 5km travel as he is currently Farmleigh, which is located in the park.
