COVID 19: Portugal Update, 25 May

Portugal registered today a total 1,330 deaths related to covid-19, 14 more than on Sunday, and 30,788 infected, 165 more, according to the epidemiological bulletin released by the Directorate-General for Health.

Compared to Sunday's data, which recorded 1,316 deaths, today there was an increase of 1.1 percent in deaths.

Regarding the number of confirmed cases of infection with the new coronavirus (30,788), data from the Directorate-General for Health (DGS) show that there are 165 more cases than on Sunday (30,623), representing an increase of 0.5 percent.

The North region is the one with the highest number of deaths (744), followed by the region of Lisbon and the Tagus Valley (322), the Centre (233), the Algarve (15), the Azores (15) and the Alentejo, which records a death, advances the epidemiological situation report, with updated data until 24:00 on Sunday, keeping the Autonomous Region of Madeira without a death record.

According to data from the Directorate-General for Health, 681 fatalities are women and 649 are men.

Of the deaths recorded, 897 were over 80 years old, 258 were between 70 and 79 years old, 118 were between 60 and 69 years old, 41 between 50 and 59, 15 between 40 and 49, and one patient was between 20 and 29 years.

The clinical characterization of confirmed cases indicates that 531 patients are admitted to hospitals, five less than on Sunday (-0.9%), and 72 are in Intensive Care Units, minus six (-7.7%).

There are 11,105 people recovering at home.

DGS data indicate that the municipality of Lisbon is the one with the highest number of cases of infection with the new coronavirus (2,182), followed by Vila Nova de Gaia (1,552), Porto (1,347), Matosinhos (1,269), Braga ( 1,209) and Gondomar (1,077).

Since 1 January, 311,223 suspected cases have been recorded, of which 1,899 are awaiting test results.

There are 278,536 cases in which the test result was negative, says DGS, adding that the number of recovered patients rose to 17,822 (273 more).

The North region continues to register the highest number of infections, totalling 16,699, followed by the region of Lisbon and the Tagus Valley, with 9,567, the Centre region, with 3,683, the Algarve (361) and Alentejo (253).

The Azores recorded 135 cases of covid-19 and Madeira recorded 90 confirmed cases, according to the bulletin released today.

DGS also records 26,449 contacts under surveillance by health authorities.

Of the total infected, 17,813 are women and 12,975 are men.

The age group most affected by the disease is 40 to 49 years old (5,185), followed by the 50 to 59 years old group (5,145) and people over 80 years old (4,431).

There are also 4,572 patients aged between 30 and 39 years, 3,957 between 20 and 29 years old, 3,409 between 60 and 69 years old and 2,501 aged between 70 and 79 years old.

DGS also records 585 cases of children up to the age of nine and 1,003 young people aged 10 to 19 years.

According to DGS, 40 percent of patients positive for the new coronavirus have cough symptoms, 29 percent fever, 21 percent muscle pain, 20 percent headache, 15 percent general weakness and 12 percent breathing difficulty. This information refers to 91 percent of confirmed cases.

The covid-19 pandemic has already claimed almost 345,000 deaths and infected more than 5.4 million people worldwide.
