Wike releases N450m to victims of 2019 ‘bloody’ election

- Victims of the bloody 2019 general elections in parts of Rivers will be compensated by the state governor

- Report has it that Governor Wike has released the sum of N450 million

- The Rivers governor said the bank accounts o those affected would be credited with the amount due them

The sum of N450 million has been released by Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers state to victims of the bloody 2019 general elections in Ijaw communities in Abonema, Akuku-Toru local government area of the state.

The Nation reports that the governor met with the victims, deceased families and the council of chiefs at their townhall in Abonema on Monday, May 25.

According to the report, the governor assured them that their bank account numbers would be credited with the amount of money due them from Wednesday.

There were indications that the families of 37 persons, who paid the supreme price, were entitled to N9m compensation each.

Before the election, Rivers state had already been listed as one of the flashpoints and it unsurprisingly lived up to expectation.

Parts of the state were engulfed in violence during the presidential and National Assembly elections. Sporadic gunshots, snatching of election materials and general voter apathy marred the election.

No fewer than eleven were feared killed while others sustained varying degrees of injury.

Meanwhile, the Rivers government alleged that some unnamed politicians in Abuja are plotting to force emergency rule in the state.

In an earlier report by Legit.ng, the state commissioner for information and communications, Paulinus Nsirim, pointed out that those behind the plot were citizens of the state residing in Abuja. He, however, did not mention names.

According to the commissioner, the plotters were trying to force the declaration of a state of emergency by causing a breakdown of law and order in Rivers.

Nsirim stated that the Rivers government was doing its best to protect the state from COVID-19 but complained that instead of supporting the state’s efforts to check COVID-19, Abuja politicians were busy looking for a way to declare state of emergency in Rivers because they want to acquire power.
