Matabeleland North police spokesperson Chief Inspector Siphiwe Makonese confirmed the incident.

She said Sianganda Mudenda tried to commit suicide by hanging himself from the truss inside his bedroom, but his 16 year old granddaughter begged him to stop.

This happened in the absence of  Mudenda’s wife,  Mrs Noloa Mudenda (66).

However Mudenda was so fixated on ending his life that he went outside and lied to his granddaughter that he was to get something from a tree on their homestead.

His granddaughter is also said to have begged him in vain not to climb the tree.

Mudenda then fell to his death from the tree

Meanwhile in other news, The Zimbabwe Republic Police warned haulage truck drivers who are giving lifts to people who are moving or travelling between cities, within cities, and even some border Jumpers.

They said besides it being a criminal offence, this act poses a risk to the Government’s efforts to fight the COVID-19 pandemic.

Police checkpoints, roadblocks and patrols have been activated to account for such drivers.

The police said haulage trucks should stick to their mandate of transporting cargo/goods from one point to the other.

The implored transport companies to take action against errant drivers.
