Burger King modifies cardboard crowns to encourage social distancing
by Laura AbernethyRestaurants around the world are changing the way they serve food as customers are encouraged to stay apart and follow social distancing rules.
Burger King has an interesting way to do it – social distancing crowns.
You’ve probably seen the cardboard crowns given out at branches of the fast-food chain before.
But this new version is a few metres wide so customers can’t get too close to eachother.
Currently, the chain is just trying it out in Germany.
Burger King told Business Insider: ‘We wanted to reinforce the rules of high safety and hygiene standards that the BK restaurants are following.
‘The do-it-yourself social-distance crown was a fun and playful way to remind our guests to practice social distancing while they are enjoying food in the restaurants.’
They posted some images of the hats on social media and fans were keen to get their hands on one.
The folded hats were given out with takeaway meals in some German stores and customers were then able to fold them.
Rules on restaurants opening vary depending on the state in Germany and as there are different franchises of Burger King too, some are open while others are closed.
It’s not the only campaign around social distancing from the brand.
In Italy, they introduced the ‘social distancing whopper’ with three times the amount of raw onions – the idea being that bad breath will keep people further away.
Elsewhere, restaurants are coming up with other ways to serve customers when they reopen.
In Schwerin, Germany, a cafe has created pool noodle hats with the same idea as the crowns.
In Australia, they’re using cardboard cutouts and crowd noise to build an atmosphere.
And in Amsterdam, a restaurant is building individual greenhouses for guests from the same household to eat together.
