Baby uninjured in Nanaimo crash that sent mother to hospital

A three-week-old infant was not hurt in a two-vehicle crash that left his mother with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.

The two were in an SUV on Saturday afternoon when the driver, a 19-year-old man, lost control of the vehicle, Nanaimo RCMP said. The SUV crossed the centre line and collided with a pickup truck before coming to rest in a ditch near Jingle Pot and Kilpatrick roads.

The woman had to be mechanically extricated from the vehicle and was airlifted to Victoria for treatment. The infant was taken to hospital as a precaution.

The SUV driver sustained injuries police described as minor, while the 33-year-old driver of the second vehicle was unhurt.

RCMP said an investigation is underway. Both vehicles were towed from the scene, and the SUV will undergo a mechanical inspection.
