Coronavirus: Invest in health to end pandemic - WHO charges world leaders

- WHO has enjoined the world leaders to invest in health amid coronavirus crisis, saying "health is not a cost but investment"

- WHO director-general, Tedros Ghebreyesus, said 106,000 cases were reported on Tuesday - highest in a single day since Covid-19 outbreak

As the world faces the challenges of curtailing the ravaging coronavirus crisis, World Helth Organisation (WHO) says 106,000 cases were reported on Tuesday, May 19 - the most in a single day since the outbreak in China.

WHO director-general, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, made this disclosure during his opening remarks at the media briefing on Covid-19 on Wednesday, May 20.

Ghebreyesus further stated that during a virtual meeting held by world leaders, it was agreed that "barriers to universal access to vaccines, diagnostics and therapeutics" should be lifted.

Among top resolutions made during the meeting which was also attended by President Cyril Ramaphosa of South Africa and President Xi of China, it was submitted that vaccines should be classified as a global public good for health in order to bring the pandemic to an end.

Ghebreyesus expressed hope and urged the world leaders to invest in the health sector and ensure that the institution is handed a high-quality priority in order to bring the crisis into an end.

"I want to end by emphasizing that there is continued hope," the WHO director-general said.

"The pandemic has taught and informed many lessons: Health is not a cost; it’s an investment. To live in a secure world, guaranteeing quality health for all is not just the right choice; it’s the smart choice."

There are 5,126,543 cases of coronavirus spread across over 200 counties in the world, 330,853 deaths and 2,044,049 recoveries.

Meanwhile, Legit.ng earlier reported that in a concentrated effort against novel coronavirus, Rwanda has acquired five humanoid robots aimed at reducing contact between medics and patients.

The high-tech robots were launched at the Kanyinya Covid-19 Treatment Centre by the country's Ministry of Health on Tuesday, May 19, as Rwanda took a fast leap ahead of its sister African countries in the battle against the ravaging pandemic.
