One major event centred around the province's beer, brewery scene is not going ahead

The BC Beer Awards team says the event depends too much on large groups of people being present

Organizers hope to return in 2021

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) — BC Beer Awards organizers have announced they will be cancelling its annual festival.

Even as the province begins to reopen slowly, organizers don’t think the awards will be allowed to comfortably run an event this large.

“We are unsure of the possibility of a second wave [of COVID-19 infections] come the Fall, and of the ability to run an event of our size,” BC Beer Awards Director, Amanda Barry-Butchart, says. “We felt it was best to halt planning now rather than down the road, to avoid upset.”

The event typically takes place in October and honours the province’s best beers and breweries in British Columbia.

“We recognize that this news may disappoint the beer community. Given the ongoing uncertainty, we believe cancelling is best for our breweries and sponsors,” a release reads.

Organizers are asking beer drinkers to support their local breweries, but it hopes to return in 2021.
