Chael Sonnen mocks Jon Jones’ UFC ultimatum: ‘Just promise not do drive away, OK?’

Jon Jones’ latest clash with the UFC has provided Chael Sonnen with more fodder for his brand of insult comedy.

Less than one week after Jones’ “has-been” jab stirred a Twitter tirade at the current UFC light heavyweight champ, Sonnen came back for round two (and three, and four) as Jones took public his negotiations for a fight against heavyweight Francis Ngannou.

In a video on his “Bad Guy Inc.” YouTube channel, Sonnen started with relative restraint, scolding Jones for going to the UFC before building critical mass for his heavyweight debut, saying the champ gave away all his negotiating power in the process.

“Let the public take it to the UFC, and the chain of events is the UFC has to like it enough that they call you – they call you,” Sonnen said. “They call you? Boom, you’ve got them. Now we can talk money. You call them? You don’t get to talk money. It doesn’t work that way. Jon did everything out of order. Proof that he did everything out of order is that he didn’t get what he wanted.”

Sonnen said in addition to approaching the promotion the wrong way, Jones should have been a little more charitable toward his employer after they passed on calls to punish him after his second DUI arrest, which resulted in another plea agreement that allowed him to avoid jail time.

“This is your opportunity to back the company, unless you’re not very smart,” Sonnen said.

And on that note, Sonnen appeared to go to a teleprompter as he pulled from crime blotter headlines to hammer that point.

“There was a man arrested on arson and vandalism,” he said. “He sent a selfie to the police in Ohio because he found the photo of his arrest warrant to be unflattering. That guy is smarter than Jon Jones.”

That diatribe followed another one on Twitter as Sonnen went full on at Jones’ claim that he would step away from the sport in the wake of the failed negotiations (Jones later reversed his position to say he would return in his usual weight class).

The three-time UFC title challenger and commentator decisively lost to Jones when they met at UFC 159, suffering a first-round TKO in a meeting that followed their appearance on “The Ultimate Fighter 17.” Sonnen’s opinion of Jones has since nose-dived, prompting online barbs as Jones’ career continues in the UFC.
