Earthquake recorded in the Monchique region

The Portuguese Institute of the Sea and the Atmosphere (IPMA) recorded an earthquake of magnitude 2.6 on the Richter scale on 24 May, with an epicentre four kilometres from Monchique.

“The Portuguese Institute of the Sea and the Atmosphere informs that on 24/05/20 at 16:24 (local time) an earthquake of magnitude 2.6 (Richter) was registered at the stations of the Seismic Network of the Continent, whose epicentre is located about 4 kilometres northeast of Monchique”, a statement said.

Until the document was sent, he informs, the IPMA "had not received any information confirming that this earthquake has been felt".

“The location of the epicentre of an earthquake is a complex physical and mathematical process that depends on the data set, the algorithms and the seismic wave propagation models. Different agencies can produce slightly different results”, warns the IPMA.
