HIGHLIGHTS

More than a week after the government announced relaxing of lockdown curbs, the Delhi-Ghaziabad has been sealed due to rising number of coronavirus cases.

Ghaziabad DM Ajay Shankar Pandey on Monday ordered the sealing of the Delhi border as cases in the national capital continue to mount.

Only those with valid passes as well as those employed in essential services will be allowed to travel from Delhi to Ghaziabad. Heavy vehicles, cargo vehicles, vehicles related to banking services and other essential services will be allowed to cross the border without a pass.

There have been 227 cases of coronavirus in Ghaziabad, of which 33 are active cases.

After the move was announced, a 3-km long was seen at the Delhi-Ghaziabad border.

The Ghaziabad administration had previously sealed the Delhi-UP border in April after the district emerged as one of the worst-hit by coronavirus in Uttar Pradesh. However, the border was opened after new relaxations were announced for the fourth phase of the lockdown.

Economic activities may have resumed in the NCR during the much-relaxed lockdown 4.0, but the restrictions on the interstate movement of people have severely impacted the traders and professionals of the national capital and its satellite cities.

For those engaged in the essential services, commuting across the border seems a lesser hassle, but people in other sectors are finding it difficult to move between cities.

Those working in Delhi and residing in the satellite cities or vice-a-versa face an uphill task on a daily basis as they try to reach their workplaces.

The neighbouring cities have sealed the borders with Delhi to check the spread of coronavirus.

The Gautam Buddh Nagar administration has sealed the Noida-Delhi for movement except for emergencies or essential services and for people having administration-issued passes.

Delhi has so far reported 13,418 cases of coronavirus of which 261 patients have died of the viral infection.
