Billiat On Where He Belongs…
by Soccer LadumaFive Kaizer Chiefs players have reflected on the African diaspora as the entire continent celebrates a significant day on the calendar.
Khama Billiat, Lazarous Kambole, Daniel Akpeyi, Anthony Akumu, and Erick Mathoho have all been speaking on the club’s official website to remember Africa Day – an annual commemoration of the foundation of African Unity on May 25, 1963.
“Being an African means a lot to me because I get to learn about different cultures. I also get to explore the beauty of our land and have a sense of belonging,” the Zimbabwean striker explained.

“I live with a sense of being a cultured and respectful human being. Most of all I was taught to always carry the spirit of Ubuntu in me no matter where I am.”
Akpeyi, who arrived in SA nearly five years ago to join Chippa United before his big move to Chiefs, also added his voice.
“Being African is a blessing to me because Africa is a place where if carefully studied, has a lot to explore. From natural resources to diverse and beautiful cultures. Africans mostly live for each other; we fight for each other,” the Nigerian goalkeeper said.
Kambole added that, to him, being an African is about being resilient.
“Being an African to me means being a fighter,” the Zambian added.
“I never give up even when things don’t go my way. I am a fighter for what is right and focus on the brighter future ahead. All these are borne out of being an African.”
Akumu, the Kenyan who moved to Naturena in January echoed his teammates sentiments.
To conclude the celebration in words from a Chiefs perspective, Mathoho spoke of having to embrace different cultures and nationalities.
“Since I turned professional as a footballer, mingling, and interacting with fellow African brothers is a norm to me. At Chiefs, we experience the integration even more given the multitude of supporters we have from all the different nations,” added ‘Tower’.
