Uganda starts exporting mobile phones

The company, which employs 400 workers, is currently assembling and manufacturing 2,500 phones per day but has plans to double its capacity and recruit more workers.

The first consignment of mobile phones, manufactured at the Namanve Industrial Park in Mukono district, by SIMI Mobile Uganda, a subsidiary of Engo Holdings Group Limited, was on Saturday flagged off by Evelyn Anite, the state minister for privatisation and investment.

The company, which employs 400 workers, is currently assembling and manufacturing 2,500 phones per day but has plans to double its capacity and recruit more workers. Over 2,000 employees are expected to be recruited with increased production.

In addition, the company, working in partnership with the National Information Technology Authority- Uganda (NITA-U) under the ICT ministry, is planning to invest sh55.6b over a period of five years to boost their production capacity.

Kenyan truck drivers block Malaba border

Hundreds of Kenyan truck drivers have, since Thursday, blocked the road to Malaba customs post on the Kenyan side of the border.

The protest has paralysed cargo movement and customs activities, blocking the highway to any incoming and outgoing motorists.

The Busia border post is operating normally, after a short-lived protest on Wednesday, by the Kenyan truck drivers.
