Blood curdling screams could be heard as a large group of men kicked a man lying on the ground outside Zain News in Somerville Road, Small Heath.
In the dramatic footage above , around thirty males are seen congregating as a few of them take turns to strike another man with batons in the middle of the road.
A woman appears to be trying to protect the man as he is left cowering on the floor by the end of the clip.
It is believed the footage was filmed shortly after a shop worker was struck with a hatchet inside the newsagents late on Saturday afternoon (May 23).
The staff member, a man in his 30s, suffered a cut near to his ear from the small one-handed axe while another man in his 40s was sprayed with an unknown substance.
The second man was unharmed.
Police were called to the scene at 5.45pm - by which time they said members of the public had "helped detain" a 28-year-old man.
A man was arrested on suspicion of wounding and remained in police custody on Sunday afternoon.
It is not known what sparked the violence, but police are continuing to investigate.
A statement from West Midlands Police on Sunday read: "We were called after a shop worker was hit with a hatchet in Handa News, Somerville Road, Small Heath, around 5.45pm yesterday (23 May).
"The man, aged in his 30s, suffered a cut near his ear.
"Another man in his 40s was sprayed in the face with an unknown substance but was left uninjured.
"Members of the public helped detain a 28-year-old man until officers arrived and he was arrested on suspicion of wounding.
"He remains in police custody for questioning as enquiries continue."
