A Sungura band which hails from Redcliff, in the Midlands province has bore the brunt of the financial constraints, brought about by the national lockdown caused by the Covid-19 pandemic.
With gigs out of the question, some of the band members have turned to menial jobs in order to sustain their livelihoods.
The band has been going through financial woes and their senior member and publicist, Langton Madima has now resorted to vending airtime in Rutendo suburb.
To date, Mavanga Express have 3 albums to their name and although they’re not mainstream, they have quite a following in the peri-urban areas and various mining communities in the Midlands area.
In an interview with ZWnews, Madima said the band has decided to suspend studio rehearsals indefinitely, together with other music commitments and have decided to hustle for survival.
He said their livelihoods and functionality of the band was solely dependent on their live shows, which they normally hold in the peri-urban and rural areas within Midlands.
Said Madima
He said the other band members are also facing a hard time, as they were looking up to the leaders to back them up financially.
Madima has said that they were waiting for financial relief from the Kwekwe Chapter of the National Arts Council, however nothing has materialised up now.
He appealed to the corporate sector to aid not only Mavanga Express, but other artists and bands who are in the same boat due to the lockdown in the country.
Zimbabwe has been in Covid-19 Lockdown since the 30th of March.
Currently, the lockdown phase is on level 2, with more essential services allowed to operate, however crowds, religious gatherings and music shows are still banned.
