Former MP's Mother Collapses After Govt Demolishes Her House
by Derrick OkubasuA mother to former nominated member of the National Assembly Catherine Nyamato collapsed after witnessing demolition of her house. The 95-year-old lady is current receiving treating at a Nyamira hospital.
According to a report by The Standard, the woman, Pauline Alexander, was inside her homestead in Nyamira on Saturday morning, 23 May, when she saw bulldozers coming in to demolish her house.
Speaking to the press, the former lawmaker rebuked the incident accusing the Nyamira County Government of not being sensitive to the needs of the people when majority of families are still grappling with the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic.
“The people who are being affected by the demolitions chose their leaders. Where are they to defend them? We need protection from such oppressive actions by the county government,” stated the former lawmaker.

She further disclosed that her mother was responding well to medication.
Nyamato was not the only dignitary who was affected by the demolitions as former Kiabonyoru MCA James Sabwengi lost a food processing factory.
The factory, according to the former MCA, was valued at Ksh15 million.
In the state's defence, Roads and Public Works Executive John Omanwa claimed that the affected individuals had encroached on government's land that was part of a road reserve.
“Nyamira town has for long lacked access roads and by-passes and the move to create the new ones was informed by the fact that the plan of the urban centre needed to change,” stated Omanwa.
The demolitions have reportedly been ongoing for the past 10 days.
The demolitions coincided with those of Nairobi's Ruai and Mathare areas that have been estimated to have left over 7,000 families out in the cold and unable to leave the city.
