Race-by-race tips and preview for Newcastle on Tuesday
by Neil EvansTrack likely Soft 5/6 and rail out 10m so just off the speed early before levelling out.
Race 1 CLASS 1 HCP (1895m)
One of those tricky middle-distance tactical battles to start, and most are in with a shot. Promising three-year-old filly 6. Soul Purpose form the Mark Newnham stable at Randwick will try to repeat the dose from Hawkesbury when she swept home from the back for a dominant maiden win. Form has already stacked up from that win and rise in grade nicely off-set at the weights after jockey's claim. Only needs reasonable speed on from the half mile to be the one to beat.
Dangers: Progressive Randwick three-year-old 2. Lando Bay came off his maiden win at Wyong with a terrific closing effort behind a smart one in a strong CL1 on Scone Cup day. Forecast rain won't hurt either. Randwick four-year-old 1. All Things takes a natural step up in trip after finishing too well to claim his maiden here second-up, and draws to trail the speed. Improving Warwick Farm three-year-old 3. Heimberg peaked beautifully fourth-up after a couple of handy provincial runs, careering away to win his maiden at Goulburn as heavily backed favourite by more than six lengths. Harder here, but draws well and is on the rise.
How to play it: Soul Purpose to win and trifecta 2,6/1,2,4,6/1,2,4,6
Odds and Evens: Evens
Race 2 CLASS 1 HCP (1500m)
Another small field where pace will be crucial. Impressed with the third-up maiden win at Kembla of Far North Coast three-year-old 3. Divine Eleven from the Matt Dunn yard, charging home from midfield. Doesn't want it too far into soft rating, but will relish this trip and track.
Dangers: Improving Randwick three-year-old 1. Faretti was sound first-up in a much tougher metro sprint, and draws to get a charmed run, but this is as far as he wants second-up under a big weight. Rosehill three-year-old 4. Srini steps up from a fast-finishing maiden win at Hawkesbury, and the softer under foot the better; while resuming Warwick Farm filly 5. Fulmina is the best of the rest, winning the latest of two trials.
How to play it: Divine Eleven to win and trifecta 1,3/1,3,4,5/1,3,4,5
Odds and Evens: Odds
Race 3 MAIDEN PLATE (1500m)
Same distance for the maidens, and Randwick four-year-old gelding and perennial place-getter 2. Costa Zou from the John Thompson yard can finally break through fourth-up this prep, with winkers going on. Has been narrowly beaten in deeper maidens last two starts here. Draws to get the right trail and be too strong late.
Dangers: Rosehill six-year-old and former UK stayer 3. First Footman was strong in only his second run Down Under off a nine-month spell. Obviously bred to get much further but second-up form is sound and stable has a good opinion. Sire was a two-time group 1 winner. Big watch on two Waller-trainer three-year-old fillies: 8. Rules Don't Apply, who was consistently in the placings first prep, and resumes off a nice trial win; while expect sharp improvement second-up from 9. Space Is Deep, who got a mile back resuming and will appreciate more ground and a bigger track.
How to play it: Costa Zou to win
Odds and Evens: Split
Race 4 MAIDEN PLATE (900m)
Back to the scamper course and doubt anything can match two-year-old colt 9. Meadow Land, from the leading local stable of Kris Lees, resuming off two sharp trials. Was scratched from a similar race here on Saturday after drawing wide and jumps from the inside in this.
Dangers: Doubt there are any but Randwick two-year-old colt 12. Coat Of Arms looks the quinella runner improving off a nice debut effort at Kembla. Watch the betting on Randwick filly 5. New Day, who resumes off a quiet trial and will be running on late.
How to play it: Meadow Land to win and in-order trifecta 9-12-5
Odds and Evens: Split
Race 5 MAIDEN HCP (1300m)
Still with the maidens and this is tricky, with most either resuming or early in the prep. Warwick Farm three-year-old gelding 1. Brook Hill from the Bjorn Baker stable can progress off a handy debut here when closing off late. Draws to get plenty of cover and was also preferred here over Saturday's meeting.
Dangers: Expect a different horse this time in with Warwick Farm three-year-old 3. Past Tense, who returns as a gelding with blinkers on for top metro stable off two quiet trials. Godolphin filly 7. Dulcero also resumes off two tidy trials, with blinkers on for the first time. Watch the betting on Wyong three-year-old 2. Underboss (Animal Kingdom x Lobster by Redoubte's Choice) who debuts in blinkers off two fair trials, and was scratched from Taree on Monday to be saved for this.
How to play it: Brook Hill to win
Odds and Evens: Odds
Race 6 CLASS 2 HCP (1200m)
Most open race of the day but that means great value about promising three-year-old gelding 3. Minted from the Joe Pride yard at Warwick Farm. Has to overcome a wide draw but was strong to the line resuming under a big weight at Kembla and beat a good maiden field at only previous second-up run.
Dangers: Consistent Hawkesbury four-year-old 1. Zouologist returns to the track where he scored four runs back and has been in the placings since, including a last-start brave effort in BM 70 metro company. Expect a big first-up run from Randwick three-year-old 2. Arthur In Charge, who returns as a gelding off two sound trials and draws to get a handy trail. Randwick filly 4. Crimlet was disappointing first-up at Hawkesbury when well backed but also won only previous second-up run showing sharp improvement; while expect Randwick mare 6. Brunetta to run on strong resuming off two trials.
How to play it: Minted to win
Odds and Evens: Split
Race 7 BM 70 HCP (1400m)
Good open race to finish. Smart three-year-old filly 4. Trajection from the Kim Waugh yard at Wyong keeps measuring up in this grade, despite a lengthy prep. Last two wins - four runs back and last start - have been at this track, powering home from well off the speed, and carries the same weight after new rider's claim.
Dangers: Hawkesbury four-year-old 7. Reiby's Regent is at the top of his game, finishing hard to just miss here in a BM 64 before powering away to bolt in at Wyong. Has good acceleration and likely to roll forward again over this trip. Godolphin three-year-old 2. Whispered stuck on bravely this grade here fourth-up after doing some work, and draws to get a better run; while stablemate three-year-old 6. Golwen did a good job under a big weight to round them up in weaker grade at Kembla, but draws the outside barrier.
How to play it: Trajection each way and trifecta 4,7/2,4,7/2,4,6,7
Odds and Evens: Split
