Liverpool FC fans fume at Owen Hargreaves over Timo Werner to Manchester United claim
Former Man United midfielder Owen Hargreaves thinks Timo Werner would be better suited to a move to Old Trafford than Liverpool.
by Joe Bray, https://www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk/authors/joe-bray/Liverpool fans have not reacted well to Owen Hargreaves' suggestion that Timo Werner would be better off signing for Manchester United than their club.
Werner scored a hat-trick on Sunday as RB Leipzig beat Mainz 5-0 in the Bundesliga, as the Germany international reminded any potential buyers of his quality. Liverpool have long been linked with Werner, but United are monitoring him.
On commentary duty for BT Sport for Leipzig's big win was former United midfielder Hargreaves, who discussed Werner's options this summer and whether he should sign for Liverpool.
Hargeaves, who also played in the Bundesliga for Bayern Munich, said Werner would struggle to displace Roberto Firmino at Anfield, but suggested that United need a number nine like him and a move to Old Trafford may see him play more.
"Well, he's not going to get past Bobby Firmino, who is one of my favourite players to watch," Hargreaves said.
"I think that's the thing. Wherever he goes, he has to play. But I could see him at Manchester United, I think they could do with a number nine and his ability to score goals - with Lukaku leaving [last season] - could be a big plus
"Chelsea could be a good fit, I just think he's perfect for Liverpool in a way but he's not guaranteed to start. If he's happy rotating in the front three then yes, he'd be a great fit for Jurgen Klopp.
"He works hard, he's a good goal-scorer, he's a good teammate, all those things they need but he's not going to play ahead of Roberto Firmino, I just don't see that. He's too good in that team."
Even though Hargreaves said Werner would be a good fit at Liverpool, their fans on Twitter couldn't get past the idea that United would be a better move.
Werner's hat-trick for Leipzig took his tally to 30 goals and 12 assists in 28 appearances this season. Leipzig sit third in the Bundesliga, but are seven points behind leaders Bayern Munich.
