Newcastle United should rekindle interest in Danny Ings amid Southampton fire-sale reports

Newcastle United were reportedly keen on the striker back in 2018.

A recent report from the Daily Star has suggested Southampton could be forced to sell some of their star players this summer. 

It is suggested that the club’s Chinese owner Gao Jisheng is trying to sell his majority stake in the club. Should he fail to do so, at a cut-price valuation of £150 million, Southampton will look to raise £100 million in the transfer market to cover their reported ‘spiralling debts’.

Ings was one of the players listed and given his £20 million previous price-tag and impressive 18 goals this season, he could be one of the more valuable assets available at St Mary’s.

So should Newcastle United rekindle their own interest in the player?

As reported by The Chronicle in February 2018, Rafa Benitez’s Newcastle enquired about taking Ings on loan from Liverpool that January.

That summer the Chronicle suggested Ings was again an option, but Benitez got his first choice option in Salomon Rondon and Ings headed to Southampton in a loan deal that eventually became a permanent £20 million transfer, as reported by The Guardian.

Since then he has been in fine form and many believe he is deserving of an England recall. Indeed, current Newcastle boss Steve Bruce spoke glowingly of a ‘remarkable’ Ings in March, as reported by FourFourTwo.  

“(Pierre-Emerick) Aubameyang’s the top goalscorer, is he, with 17 in the Premier League? And then you’ve got Danny Ings in a team that’s been in the bottom half of the division. It’s a quite remarkable tally, so fair play to him. He’s playing right at the height of his talent, so we’ll have to guard against him that’s for sure.

“You don’t get many now getting 20 like they used to, or a (Alan) Shearer who gets 30 or 40. It’s quite remarkable. If a striker now gets probably a dozen, 15, then they’ve done remarkably well and that’s how difficult the Premier League is.

“When you look with 10 games to go, what is it, Aubameyang 17, is it? (Sergio) Aguero 16? These are superstars, and then you’ve got somebody like Danny, who has had a remarkable season.”

The Magpies are set to be taken over by a Saudi-backed consortium in the days to come which is set to propel the club into a new sphere regarding transfer influence. 

So they would seemingly have the money to rectify their previous error. 

Whilst big names from around Europe are being linked with the club, Newcastle would be better off bringing in talented players with proven Premier League experience, boxes that Ings certainly ticks. 

If Ings is to become available this summer, then Newcastle should position themselves at the front of the queue.
