Report: Newcastle want Antero Henrique as club’s new sporting director
by Will ButcherFrench outlet Le10Sport have claimed that Newcastle United’s soon-to-be new owners want to appoint former Paris Saint-Germain sporting director Antero Henrique, upon the announcement of a takeover.
Amanda Staveley’s Saudi-backed bid is said to be close to completion and the new-look board are keen to bring in a sporting director – as well as a new manager. Rafa Benitez and Mauricio Pochettino have been heavily linked with the role.
But a new sporting director remains to be seen. Luis Campos has been approached, but it is believed the Portuguese supremo working wonders at Lille is likely to return to Monaco. Henrique, meanwhile, is without a club.
Henrique, 52, has only worked for two clubs as a sporting director, but spent a decade at Porto before moving to PSG in 2017 – where he masterminded deals for both Kylian Mbappe and Neymar – as per Spanish newspaper AS.
TBR’s view – Henrique could mastermind Newcastle overhaul
In these modern times, any big club has a sporting director that works in tandem with the manager and board when looking for potential targets. With Newcastle’s looking to join the big boys, a sporting director is certainly required.
Henrique could be ideal. Despite being out of work, he remains in contact over plenty of moves – including Manchester United’s move to sign Bayern star Corentin Tolisso, as per Le10Sport. His enormous contacts could make him an excellent appointment.
