Soccer season was set to commence just days before the lockdown and the uncertainty of games resuming looms over Amanzimtoti United Football Club’s chairman, Zenzo Ncube. The lockdown has certainly had a big impact on the football team and the community at large.

Zenzo said, “We live in a sport-loving community and all the sporting codes across the board have been affected immensely. It has really been a big blow to the team, especially to the youngsters who were looking forward to starting the season which was about to kick-off and they were prepared for the season mentally, physically and tactically. They had to stop everything and stay indoors. We all have been affected. As a club, we implemented all the measures such as new trends kicking in.”

He explained that despite not being able to play the sport, players are still keeping fit and active.

“The club has to put some contingency plans in place to keep our players, families and their friends active. One of our coaches also developed a plan and we hope that these simple drills are keeping the fitness levels up. The drills involve a lot of ball work and fitness. They have been busy and they are made for all age groups, from U7 to U17 and seniors. Parents are supervising the drills and we hope that the players busy and active.”

Once lockdown is lifted, the passionate chairman looks forward to seeing all the players and the supporters back in good shape, health and spirits.

“This is our first priority. We are also hoping that as a team, and once we are back, there will be plans from our mother bodies to continue the game since a lot of time has been lost. It might not be possible to have a full season. We are hoping that our players will have some game time. During these tough times, the community must keep themselves fit and mobile it is not about how much or how little space you have to exercise, but rather how you can use it. There are many exercises that you can do in your gardens jogs, skipping or other simple exercises. We encourage the community to keep fit and remain healthy during this time.   As a club, we also stand guided by our mother bodies such as Durban Central Local Soccer Association, Safa and Fifa. We hope that positive news will come once lockdown is over. The health and safety of all members have to be considered. We wish everyone all the best during lockdown and that we are all healthy and in good spirits when this is over,” he added.
