More details have emerged on the strange case of the late Paul Munakopa, 34,who was fatally shot by the Bulawayo police, while he was driving with his girlfriend, Tracy Mufudzi.
Yesterday national police spokesperson, Assistant Paul Nyathi confirmed the incident and said the couple was confronted by the police and the community neighborhood watch before they took off in their car, resulting in a highspeed chase.
A shootout ensued after the Honda Fit the couple were driving hit the police’s car, which resulted in Munakopa’s injury and later on, his death.
Assistant Commissioner Nyathi said Munakopa and his girlfriend were reportedly found naked at the scene.
According to Mufudzi’s brother, Loveradge Mufudzi, the couple fled from the police as they did not know who was in the vehicle chasing their own.
Mufudzi said when he arrived at the shooting scene after he got a call from his sister, two white men jumped out of the vehicle wearing caps and bandanas as masks.
Two police officers are said to have emerged from the car and started firing , then hit Munakopa on the hand, resulting in him losing control of the vehicle, which landed in a ditch.
One of the police officers is alleged to have smashed a window and pulled Munakopa out of the vehicle.
One of the white man reportedly called an ambulance to fetch an injured Munakopa and he was rushed to hospital.
Doctors assured the family that he would be fine but his hand would have to be amputated, however just 30 minutes after they departed from the hospital, they got a phone call informing them that Munakopa had succumbed to his injuries.
Mufudzi said the police officers at the shooting scene did not even identify themselves to the family.
The 2 white men were allowed to drive off from the scene but the family met them again at Hillside Police Station, together with the other police officers, giving statements.
Mufudzi reportedly took videos at the scene and one of the men, believed to be a police officer ordered him to stop filming the whole incident.
Mufudzi said police were yet to explain why they targeted the vehicle.
Assistant Commissioner Nyathi has said there were several suspicious facts about the Honda Fit and more details would be released soon.
Mufudzi said there were no criminal elements in the case
