Veteran actor Anupam Kher has completed 36 years in Bollywood and on his special day, the 65-year-old actor shared a special video on social media.
Kher made his acting debut in Bollywood with the Mahesh Bhatt-directorial Saaransh in 1984. The 29-year-old Kher played a retired middle-class-teacher who loses his son. Kher said that he lost his hair at a young age, and thus, his first role was playing a 65-year-old at the age of 29.
The film was a moderate box-office success though Kher's performance earned him widespread praise. He won several awards for his debut flick, including the Filmfare Award in the best actor category.
Kher took to Twitter to post a video featuring some scenes from his movies. He wrote, "My 1st film #Saaransh was released on 25th May, 1984. I complete 36 years in the world of entertainment today. It has been an incredible journey so far."
"God has been kind. And you, my audiences have given me so much love. THANK YOU!! #36YearsOfAnupam #KuchBhiHoSaktaHai," Kher added.
Mahesh Bhatt recalled the portrayal of Kher in the film. He wrote, "36 years of SAARANSH! He was just 28 years old when he made his debut in this iconic role of a school teacher who has lost his son in an act of senseless violence. Thank you, Anupam for helping me birth this heartbreaking inspired creation."
Kher replied to Bhatt's tweet and said, "Thank you @MaheshNBhatt Saab for your faith, generosity, kindness and love. I would've never had this kind of journey if my first film was not #Saaransh. It changed my life and me. #36YearsOfAnupam proudly. Jai Ho!!"
Kher was born in Shimla into an Indian Kashmiri Pandit family. His father was a clerk and he had a modest upbringing. In 1978, Kher graduated from the National School of Drama (NSD) in New Delhi.
Over a span of 36 years, Kher has delivered some of the biggest hits of the Hindi film cinema, which include Daddy (1989), Karma(1986), Darr (1993), Chaalbaaz (1989), (Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayaenge (1995), A Wednesday (2008), Tezaab (1998), Ram Lakhan (1989), Lamhe (1991), Kuch Kuch Hota Hai (1998) among others.
Kher, the recipient of two National Film Awards, has appeared in over 500 films in several languages and many plays. He is known internationally for Bend It Like Beckham (2002), Bride and Prejudice (2004), The Mistress of Spices (2006) and Lust, Caution (2007), Speedy Singhs (2011), and TV show ER. In 2012, he co-starred in the Academy Award-winning Silver Linings Playbook.
He has held the post of chairman of the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) and the National School of Drama (NSD) in India. The Government of India honoured him with the Padma Shri in 2004 and the Padma Bhushan in 2016 for his contribution in the field of cinema and arts.
