Dees great reveals he sank a putt to win MJ $25,000 during remarkable golf match
by Matt BalmerFormer No.1 draft pick Jeff White has revealed his remarkable friendship with basketball legend Michael Jordan, outlining the time he won the NBA great $25,000 on the golf course.
White had always idolised Jordan, with Fremantle’s No.1 ticket holder Luc Longley inviting the ruckman over to training back in 1997.
But it wasn’t until a meeting with a mutual friend of Adam Scott’s which helped the pair link up.

White had played golf with a friend of Scott’s, who in turn helped the pair form a close bond.
“Scotty grabbed the phone (off me) and said ‘I’ll see you next week, we’re playing golf’,” he revealed on ABC Grandstand.
“Neita (David Neitz) grabbed me in a headlock and said I’m playing with you. It was Adam, Neita, me and Dylan, that was 2001.
“We’ve become really good friends. If he was playing in Melbourne, he’d stay in my house.”
In 2011, White was forced to cancel his return flights back to Australia from watching Scott on tour, with a chance meeting with Jordan planned.
“We’re driving back to the hotel… Scotty asked me when I’m going home and I said ‘Sunday night’ and he said, ‘well you’ll have to change your plans because we’re playing with Michael Jordan Monday’,” White explained.
“I was speechless, we had dinner that night and he showed me the text. Adam is one of Michael Jordan’s favourite golfer.”
“We played golf and got to the first tee. Michael brought two of his buddies, we threw six balls up and it became Michael, Johnsy and myself against Adam, Billie and Billie,” he said.
“The first drive, par five. I hadn’t played for a while. I’m absolutely pooing myself, so nervous and I just strike it down the middle.”
“He (Jordan) was going nuts (after White nailed 2nd shot). My jaw was so sore because I was laughing so much at the banter he was giving to Adam.”

But it turns out there was a kicker to the final hole, which White didn’t know until 12 months later.
“On the last one, I’m the only one with the shot. I had a 15 to 20 footer to win, you can imagine here I am,” he said.
“Michael and Johnsy lining up the put with me. I’d bin it. He comes over and gives me a chest pop. It was just a surreal moment.
“There was another group in front of us and a guy kept coming back asking for scores, he’s not only giving it to Adam but to this other guy.
“(Then) 12 months later, it turns out I’d won MJ 25 grand because of a side bet with the guy in front of us. I spoke to Michael in January, we still chat here and there.”
